Out & About Hiking

Founded in 1989,

we meet at 10.00am on every Sunday of the year (excluding Christmas Day). Return time varies depending on the weather, and on the length of daylight - usually between 5.00pm and 7.00pm in the winter months, and 7.00pm to 9.00pm (or even later) on bright summer evenings. The length and difficulty of each hike varies, between 10km and 25km.

Our meeting point is outside the National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace. Earlsfort Terrace is in the city centre on the south side of the River Liffey, on the corner of St Stephen's Green (diagonally across from the top of Grafton Street). St Stephen's Green is served by the LUAS (Green line), and by several buses.

You do not need to be a member of the group, nor do you need to book in advance - just turn up on time. Bring a packed lunch, a change of clothes for after the hike, and do make sure that you have suitable hiking gear for the terrain and the weather.

Please note: Starting in December there is a small €2 contribution to join the hike collected at the meeting point; to help cover group costs.

In 2000 we formed a club and joined the Mountaineering Council of Ireland. The M.C.I. recognises that mountaineering and climbing are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement. Most of our regular walkers are now club members - if you become a regular, we'll provide you with more information on the advantages of joining.

Travel arrangements

We drive to the starting point of the hike in private cars - the journey time is usually between 45 and 90 minutes from the city centre up into the Wicklow Mountains south of the city. During the summer months, we travel further afield to other mountain ranges.

You do not need to have a car to join the hike, we welcome new drivers who are willing to offer lifts.
